Admissions for International Students
Gauhati University welcomes international students to its vibrant academic environment in Guwahati,
the gateway to Northeast India. The University offers graduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes
across Arts, Science, Technology, Commerce, Management, Law, and interdisciplinary domains.
Academic qualifications from universities or boards recognised as equivalent by the
Association of Indian Universities (AIU)
shall be the sole criterion for admission under these regulations.

Admission Categories
Category 1
Self-Financed Students
Students who can finance their education without any external support. Apply through the
University's online admission portal. Contact the University for guidance on the correct procedure.
Category 2
ICCR Cultural Exchange Fellowship (Government of India)
Students with an ICCR fellowship must apply through the Indian High Commission / Embassy
in their home country. The application is forwarded to ICCR, Government of India, which then
forwards it to universities. If found suitable, an admission offer is sent through
ICCR, New Delhi. Apply via the ICCR A2A Scholarships portal.
Admission of international students and NRI under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
is made in accordance with the terms and conditions of the MoU agreed to between
Gauhati University and the concerned country / university / institution.

Programme-wise Eligibility & Requirements
Graduate Programmes (BTech)
Gauhati University offers BTech programmes in Biotechnology, Information Technology,
Computer Science, and Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE).
International students with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in their
12th standard (Science stream) are eligible for admission to these programmes.
Postgraduate / Masters Programmes
To qualify for admission to PG programmes, an international student must provide:
English proficiency: A valid TOEFL or IELTS score (not older than two years) if the applicant's mother tongue is not English. See the English Proficiency section in the sidebar for accepted alternatives.
Proof of financial support or scholarship documentation.
If an international student has not completed the equivalent prerequisite course / programme as
stated in the minimum eligibility conditions, the Admission Committee of Gauhati University
will take the final decision on admission.
Doctoral (PhD) ProgrammeGURET WAIVED
International applicants are not required to appear in GURET.
The counselling process for international applicants may be carried out through available technology
such as video conferencing.
Eligibility
Minimum 55% marks (or equivalent grade) in the qualifying Master's examination in the concerned subject.
Programmes are open across: Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Law, Technology, Fine Arts, Engineering, and Medical Science.
Demonstrated proficiency in English (see English Proficiency in sidebar).
Proof of financial support or scholarship.
Evaluation Criteria
The Department Research Committee (DRC) / Faculty Research Committee (FRC) will consider:
the merit of the research proposal, reference letters, and scores of standardised
tests such as GRE. See the Research Proposal guidance in the sidebar.

English Proficiency
A proof of English language proficiency is required for PG and PhD applicants
whose mother tongue is not English. Accepted proofs:
TOEFL score report (not older than 2 years)
IELTS score report (not older than 2 years)
Certificate / transcripts showing formal education in English for at least 12 years, or English as a subject
Requirement applies to Masters and PhD applicants. Check with the admissions office for programme-specific conditions.
Research Proposal (PhD)
The research proposal is one of the most important documents
for PhD admission. We strongly advise discussing your proposal with your prospective supervisor beforehand.
Your proposal should address:

A brief outline of your proposed research at GU
2.
Proposed deliverables — the research outcomes you expect
3.
A brief outline of the methodology you will adopt

ICCR fellowship students apply via the ICCR A2A portal. All other international students apply
through the GU Samarth portal.
Do international PhD applicants need to appear for GURET?
No. International applicants are not required to appear in GURET. The counselling process
may be conducted through video conferencing or other available technology. The Department
Research Committee / Faculty Research Committee will evaluate the research proposal,
reference letters, and scores of standardised tests such as GRE.
How do ICCR scholarship students apply?
ICCR fellowship students apply through the Indian High Commission / Embassy in their home country.
The application is forwarded to ICCR, New Delhi, which then forwards it to universities.
If found suitable, an admission offer letter is issued through ICCR. You can also apply directly
via the ICCR A2A Scholarships portal.
Is English proficiency mandatory?
Yes, for PG and PhD programmes if your mother tongue is not English. Accepted proofs include
a TOEFL or IELTS score report (not older than two years), or a certificate / transcripts
showing formal education in English for at least 12 years.
What is the AIU equivalency certificate and do I need it?
The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) issues equivalency certificates for foreign
academic qualifications. International students whose degrees are not from Indian universities
are required to obtain this certificate. It establishes that your qualification is equivalent
to the relevant Indian degree and is the sole criterion used for admission eligibility.
