Doctoral Research at Gauhati University

Gauhati University is one of the premier research universities in Northeast India, offering doctoral programmes across the sciences, humanities, social sciences, law, and management. PhD admissions are conducted through a structured and transparent process designed to identify motivated and research-oriented scholars.

Applications are processed through the Central Application Process (CAP) and the Samarth Admission Portal. Admission may involve the GURET entrance examination, exemption categories, departmental evaluation, and final selection.

GURET — GU Research Eligibility Test GURET is Gauhati University's research eligibility examination for PhD admissions. It is designed to assess subject knowledge, analytical ability, and research aptitude. Candidates holding a valid JRF, NET, or GATE score may be eligible for exemption from GURET and can proceed directly to the departmental interview, as per applicable University regulations.

General Eligibility Applicants must hold a Master's degree or equivalent qualification in the relevant or allied subject from a recognised institution, with a minimum of 55% marks (50% for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD candidates) as per UGC regulations. Candidates awaiting final postgraduate results may apply provisionally, subject to fulfilling all eligibility conditions before admission. Relaxation for reserved categories applies as per norms. Applicants employed in organisations may be required to submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC).

How to Apply

  1. Register via CAP / Samarth Complete online registration through the Central Application Process (CAP) on the Samarth portal.
  2. Select programme & upload documents Choose your discipline, upload required documents, and pay the application fee.
  3. Appear for GURET or claim exemption JRF / NET / GATE holders proceed to the departmental interview directly. Others must qualify GURET first.
  4. Departmental evaluation & interview Shortlisted candidates are called for a departmental interview / evaluation before the final merit list is prepared.
  5. Admission & provisional registration Selected candidates complete admission, pay fees, and are provisionally registered before coursework begins.
